3D scanning & reverse engineering: how we recreate a part that's no longer made

A small plastic part breaks — a button, a clip, a gear — and the manufacturer no longer makes it. You can't find it in any store. This is where 3D scanning and reverse engineering come in: we recreate the part digitally, then reproduce it with 3D printing.

What reverse engineering means

Reverse engineering is the process of turning an existing physical object into an editable digital 3D model. Instead of designing from scratch, we "read" the geometry of the real part and turn it into a file — which we can then print, modify or improve.

How it works, step by step

1. 3D scanning. With a precision scanner we capture the exact shape of the part, down to sub-millimeter detail. The result is a "point cloud" describing every surface.

2. Model reconstruction. From the scan data, an engineer builds a clean, dimensionally accurate 3D model. This is where we also fix damage — if the part is broken, we rebuild it whole.

3. Verification and adjustments. We confirm the critical dimensions (holes, threads, mounts) so the new part fits perfectly. If you want, we can improve it too — for example, thicken a fragile area.

4. 3D printing. We choose the right material (PLA, PETG, ABS or technical) and reproduce the part. You can get a single piece or a small batch.

What parts can be recreated

  • Car and motorcycle components no longer produced
  • Parts from appliances and old machinery
  • Clips, buttons, handles, gears
  • Decorative or furniture pieces
  • Prototypes based on a reference object

What we need from you

Ideally, the physical part (even broken — we rebuild it). If you no longer have it, clear photos from several angles and the main dimensions help. The more information, the more faithful the reproduction.

Honest limits

Parts with hidden internal geometry or very tight mechanical tolerances need extra work — but most of the time they can be recreated. We'll tell you upfront what's feasible.
