How to Prepare an STL File for 3D Printing — Step-by-Step Guide
How to prepare a 3D file for printing
First time ordering 3D prints? You're probably wondering: "How do I send the file?" Here's what to do.
Accepted formats
| Format | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| STL | ⭐ Industry standard |
| STEP/STP | ⭐ Best for engineering parts |
| 3MF | ⭐ Modern, with settings |
| OBJ | OK |
Don't send: photos, JPG, PDF — those need 3D modeling first.
Preparation steps
1. Check units — mm, not cm or inches
2. Size must fit 256×256×256mm (or split into sections)
3. Mesh integrity — no holes, no inverted faces
4. Orientation affects quality and supports (we optimize this)
Minimum thicknesses
- Walls: 0.8mm (1.6mm for functional parts)
- Fine features: >0.5mm
- Screw holes: +0.2mm tolerance
- Embossed text: min 12pt font
Multi-color parts
We have AMS — up to 4 colors at once. Send 3MF or separate STLs + reference image.
